My Highland Spy
Highland Spies #1

Victoria Roberts
Historical Romance (ARC review)
Pub date: Sept 2, 2014

H/h - Laird Ruairi Sutherland/Lady Ravenna Walsingham
Setting: The Highlands, Scotland and England, 1609.

Read in August/Sept, 2014.
My rating:

My Highland Spy, book 1 of the Highland Spies series by Victoria Roberts was an overall fun read of the fluffy kind, especially if you harbor the love of all things Highland and Highlanders like me. ;) This is a completely new series which talks about a family of Spies, who have been working for the Crown for some generations.

The family in question is the Walsinghams. Even though Lord and Lady Walsingham have passed away, their 4 daughters remain; the eldest Ravenna, the next, Grace, then Elizabeth and Katherine. Lord Walsingham was a spy for Queen Elizabeth, so is Ravenna’s Uncle Walter, Lord Mildmay. Their mother initially didn’t know about this. She was proud nonetheless when she had finally been told everything. Since Ravenna has no brothers, she was chosen to follow her father’s footsteps by the Queen’s people.

I’ve gradually come to appreciate Victoria Robert’s writing, so it was no surprise that I enjoyed book 3 of Bad Boys of the Highlands, To Wed a Wicked Highlander! Love her light, fun writing style with entertaining dialogues and characters. I did have a wee bit trouble about remembering Alexander or Alex because I had just finished, book 2, X Marks the Scot and was hoping for James’s book who was featured in both book 1, Temptation in a Kilt and book 2.

It took me a while to remember that Alex is Rosalia’s (h of book 1) cousin. He helped the H, Ciaran, the MacGregor laird, in rescuing Rosalia from the villain, the Earl of Argyll’s clutches. That one was rather mediocre for me story-wise. It was book 2 that took me by complete surprise! Can’t explain how much I enjoyed that, and by far, my most favorite of the series. This was Ciaran’s younger brother, Declan’s book. The h was Argyll’s younger half-sister, the beautiful healer, Liadain, for whom Declan the rake falls hard. Even when they’re forced to marry because of King James’s machinations, I knew they’d find love as their attraction was very much palpable. James about whom I was talking earlier, is a childhood friend of Rosalia and a thorn on Ciaran’s arse who is jealous of this friendship as James is a charmer.

X Marks the Scot by Victoria Roberts was pretty damned good! Since my experience with book 1 wasn’t inspiring, I didn’t know what to expect from this one. But, VR made it all worthwhile for me! I thoroughly enjoyed the storyline, but mostly, I loved seeing Declan and Liadain together. They were SO hilarious at times that I had a constant grin on my face throughout the story. These funny moments were definitely a plus point for this book.

Temptation in a Kilt
Bad Boys of the Highlands #1

H/h - Ciaran MacGregor, the Laird of Glenorchy/Lady Rosalia Armstrong
Setting: The Highlands, 1603.

Read in Sept, 2012.

Temptation in a Kilt is a debut novel by Victoria Roberts. It was recommended to me by a friend who is also a great Highlander (and anything in a kilt) lover like me. VR, being a new-to-me author, I didn’t know what to expect. All I can say, I enjoyed some parts of it, while some were plain meh and quite predictable. But, there are good things in this book too, let’s see if I can elaborate in my review.
