Moss Rose

Scottie Barrett
Historical Romance
Published in 2016 (originally 2003)

H/h - Levi North/Jensen Marlowe
Setting: Virginia, mid 1700s.

Read in January, 2017.
My rating:

                                                    [spoiler alert]

Moss Rose would be my 4th Scottie Barrett book in a row and I have to admit, I’m absolutely enjoying this ride. Or I was, until I realized that ends my foray into her backlist. :( At least her historical romance backlist. *sigh* I remember, years ago I read 2 of her books that I didn’t like, which put me off her books but boy oh boy, I had missed out on some good stuff!

Moss Rose is based in Virginia, where our H Levi North owns a tobacco plantation. I’m a little confused over the timeframe of this story but Levi was a soldier who fought against French so I’m assuming it maybe around the revolutionary era? I maybe wrong so please don’t fry me over it. LOL I don’t like having the timeframe wrong but at this point, I’m gonna let it go and start writing my review........ After Levi returned from war, he took the responsibility of the tobacco plantation cause his younger brother, Matthias is anything but responsible. His looks and temperament was exact opposite to Levi. Though both brothers were tall and good looking, Matthias was blonde and rather a jolly fellow, while Levi dark with an intense stare. But Levi proved to be a very worthy plantation owner, freeing his slaves then hiring them back again. He was trying hard to make the plantation thrive. He also took care of his workers well. When he suddenly found himself in urgent need of a good stable master, he put an ad on the newspaper, which is how our h, Jensen found herself applying for it, though I have no idea how she found that ad sitting in London.

Branded

Scottie Barrett
Erotic Historical Romance
Published in 2016 (Originally 2004)

H/h - Slade Dalton/Lacey Jarrell
Setting:Colorado, 1874.

Read in December, 2016.
My rating:

This is gonna be a tough one. I’ve been on a roll, devouring the leftover Scottie Barrett books, and Branded was the latest on my list. I just wanted to read it cause I love me some good western historical; if it’s steamy, all the better! Branded was all that and more. So much more, it left me quite a bit hot and bothered. But then, Slade Dalton has that effect on most women. ;)

TBH, I’ve been on a reading slump for a long while. Of course, there have been some good books but nothing quite held me glued like Branded. From writing to the storytelling, the chemistry between the H and the h, which was undoubtedly sizzling from the moment they met, to their banters (both hot and cold), there was no shortage of entertainment in this book. I’m only sorry it ended cause I would’ve loved for it to go on. Slade Dalton can never be boring. I feel exactly how Lacey felt about him so I can totally understand! :o

Angel's Guardian

Scottie Barrett
Erotic Historical Romance
Published in 2016

H/h - Major Nicholas Draxford/Angeline Kent
Setting: Regency.

Read in November, 2016.
My rating:

3.5 stars... another good one from Scottie Barrett. I liked it quite a bit. ;)

Angel's Guardian had one of my favorite tropes; romance between a guardian and his ward. I don't mind at all, especially if the guardian is as hot as Major Nicholas Draxford. :D

When the story opened, it took me a while getting into it. There were quite a few characters and a lot going on altogether. It seemed Angeline, or Angel, our h just arrived in her guardian's estate on occasion of his long awaited arrival. The house was full of guests and she didn't wanna be there but she had to. Only she wished she could stop thinking about Nicholas Draxford, the handsome soldier who had stolen her heart even at that tender age when she'd last seen him.

The Heat of the Knight (novella)

Scottie Barrett

Erotic Historical Romance
Published in 2016 (Originally 2009)

H/h - Lord Beckett de Saxby/Christiana
Setting: Medieval Era

Read in October, 2016.
My rating:

                                                [spoiler alert]

3.5 stars. A super hot, well-written novella. Really enjoyed The Heat of the Knight by Scottie Barrett.

Set in the medieval era, our H Beckett is all that we think a Lord of the Castle should be; darkly handsome, moody and broody. Super obsessed with our h Christiana, who once used to be his childhood friend. It started from there but so far, had not gone anywhere that Beckett would've liked it to be.

Now there were problems, 1. Christiana isn't a lady by any means, so Beckett can't think of a future with her. This means Beckett can't offer her anything more than a mistress's position. And 2. the most important one, she doesn't seem to be as attracted to him as he is, getting all hot and bothered with his best friend Colin. Since she doesn't even give him the attention he seeks, which ruins his mood every time, Beckett goes to "forget it" by seeking his numerous mistresses and other women in the castle. Among them were the prostitutes he liked bringing in or quite a few of the serving girls who happily shared his bed. Beckett is big and tall, muscular and a beast in bed and they delighted in his attention.

Carnal Deceptions

Scottie Barrett
Historical Romance/Erotica

H/h - Tallon Hawkes, the Earl of Marcliffe/Tess Starling
Setting: London, the Regency-era (unsure).

Read in Nov, 2011.

I actually wanted to read this book before The Viscount’s Addiction because of the beautiful cover. But an opium addict hero proved more alluring. I wasn’t happy with that book and sadly, not with this one as well. This book was uneven too, but what grated my nerves were both H/h and the stupid plot to bring the villain to justice. I’ll try to point them out as I go.

Edited (February 2017): I reread this story. It still was an uneven read, not as good as some of he author's other books that I recently read so my rating remains the same.

Reissue 2015 cover

------

Well, this was by no means a great book but erotica-wise not bad. Sex scenes were steamy but overall, a very uneven read. Not much was happening; I liked some of it while the other... bleh! Although it started out quite well, kinda fell flat after sometimes. I wanted to try a new author and reading Charlotte Featherstone’s Addicted (the hero being an opium addict- a 5 star from me, the review is posted in this blog), I was very interested in this one. Sadly, it didn’t live up to my expectations.
