An Excerpt from Move Me:
She paced back and forth, keeping an eye out for DAs while honing in on the residences for telling details. She stopped, peering closely at one of the houses. She crept closer, scrutinizing the wooden siding, the solid wood front door, a decorative wooden post sporting tiny twinkling lights: all were simple in design but done with artistry. They weren’t manufactured in a factory, they were hand made.
She took a moment to ground herself and raise her energy level, streaming positivity. Confidently, she walked up to the door. She raised her fist to knock, but hesitated. Was she nuts? If only she had Payson’s ability to read objects through touch, or Benjamin’s claircognizance. She wouldn’t be going in cold, with only a guess.
She sighed heavily. What other choice did she have?
She knocked hard on the front door, instantly eliciting loud, and terrifying barking from inside.
She took two steps back. Emmett hadn’t mentioned a dog. She questioned whether she’d gotten the right house.
What the hell? She stood her ground, hoping for the best. The worst would mean she had the wrong house. It was worth taking the risk.
Just then the door cracked open and Cassie heard Emmett’s voice.
“It’s okay, Da Vinci. Get back. I got this.”
“It’s me, Emmett. It’s Cassie.”
The door opened wider and he looked at her through narrowed eyes. “Cassie? What’s going on?” He looked beyond her, his eyes widening. “Are those men back? Come here, come in.”
He grabbed her arm and ushered her inside, shutting the door soundly behind them.
Ambiance of his cabin wrapped around her. Dim light from a tree branch chandelier hanging over a table in the next room back lit him. Before she could stop it, her gaze moved from his tousled hair to his bare chest, to his six-pack abs, down to his jockey shorts and bare legs.
“You don’t sleep in pajamas,” she said before thinking. “I mean, I’m sorry to wake you.”
