Christmas lights hung on the house, sending a golden glow over the yard. At midnight, Avie and her son rolled the big balls of snow on one another, making a snowman. Their giggles filled the air as they dressed their creation. Shadow watched from his position, knowing the moment he made his presence known, Avie’s world would implode. She deserved to know of Rahimi’s search for her and the prison escape.
Avie ushered her son inside. Shadow signaled his team, letting them know he intended to enter the house. He melted into the shadows, picked the lock on the back door, and entered the kitchen.
“Deni, don’t forget to brush your teeth,” she called as she walked down the stairs. Avie approached the front window, which displayed their Christmas tree. The warm light highlighted her features, and his chest tightened when he saw her beauty after all these years. She scanned the street through the curtain before turning around.
He stepped out of his hiding spot. “Hello, Avie.”
She leaned against the wall and stared at him. Avie seemed unaffected by his presence, yet she brought him to his knees.
