Bold Seduction (novella)
The Hornsby Brothers #1

Karyn Gerrard
Historical Romance
Published in 2015

H/h - Lord Spencer Hornsby/Philomena McGrattan
Setting: England, 1881.

Read in September, 2015.
My rating:

                                             [spoiler alert]

It’s been a while I’ve a Karryn Gerrard book so I had to remedy this immediately. Her latest offering is a historical romance, book 1 of the Hornsby Brothers series, Bold Seduction. It’s a short story between a Madame of a brothel and (OMG hear me scream) a virgin hero! If you know me, much like those hunky Highlanders, virgin heroes are also my favorites, as are the gigolos. Don’t ask me why, I’m just weird that way.

Philomena, or Phil as she goes by, is the Madame of a posh brothel. One day, she’s approached by two of her regular patrons about an assignment, more of a birthday gift for a recluse friend, she can’t help but wonder. Who remains a virgin at 30? A member of the nobility nonetheless! In Philomena’s 10+ yrs in this profession, she has yet to come by a virgin peer, so the whole thing snags her attention right away. These two young men wanted to send one her girls as a ‘birthday gift’ to his castle, situated in a remote area. It was as much a good-natured joke as it was their intention to help their friend, hoping he’d finally join the rank (if you know what I mean). The price they offered is quite good, so Philomena herself becomes tempted to take up on the job.

(Imperfections #2)
After years of wanting her and fighting against myself, I finally had her. For one brief weekend I was whole, looking into the eyes of the woman I've always loved. The one person I'd do anything for.

Catherine Reed is the love of my life, but I blew it when she discovered her sister and I were engaged. But things have changed. I know she doesn't want anything to do with me, she needs time. Time to heal and repair the damage the discovery of our relationship did to her and her family. I'm willing to give her time, but I will not give up on us. She is my one true addiction and a love as strong as ours is worth fighting for.

Coming back to New York to be with my family and the man I’ve always loved seemed like the perfect plan. Little did I know that I’d be living in a kind of hell after my family turned against me. In the end, I had no choice but to let go of the love of my life, Nicholas Alexander.

I'm not sure if I can ever truly recover from losing a once-in-a-lifetime love and I know things will never be the same with my family. I didn't think my life could get more complicated, but I was wrong. Consequences for the choices we've made may cost me everything.

If I Never Heard of Me, Would I Read My Book?

My jaded response to this is, yes!

In my early years I struggled to write the ‘great’ novel. Boxes of research, historically accurate recounts of situations long buried. Pages of prose jam-packed with characters on grand journeys.

They never went anywhere. I struggled with the process and the finished product left me lacking fulfillment. Downcast one day—not so very long ago—my husband asked me what I was reading. I perked up and told him about the book and what kept me moving forward in the story.

“Well, that’s what you should write,” he told me.
“Write what you would LOVE to read.”

It was a light-bulb moment and I have never looked back.

Now, I only write the story I would indeed gravitate to. So “yes,” even if I didn’t know me, I would read “Hit ‘n Run” because it is just the kind of adventure I could sink my teeth into as a reader. I have completely fallen in love with my characters as I wrote them and knowing what we know as human beings, when something is loved, it is easy for other’s to love it too.
