Annabelle's Courtship

Lucy Monroe
Historical Romance
Published in 2009

H/h - Laird Ian MacKay/Lady Annabelle
Setting: Regency.

Read in November, 2014.
My rating:

                                                     [spoiler alert]

I’ve heard of Lucy Monroe and Annabelle’s Courtship seemed to be the perfect kind of book to start off her work. Though I wasn’t fond of the writing style all that much, it still managed to keep me going, mainly because I did love the characters. Most especially, Annabelle and Ian.

Annabelle is an orphan and has been living with her widowed aunt ever since her parents passed away. Her elder brother, the current Earl, Robert has married her best friend, Diana a while ago. They have a happy marriage based on love. Annabelle, a spinster with no intentions of getting married, is not only a spirited young woman but also, a budding suffragette. She loves what she does, and marriage, after an early disappointment, seems to have no place in her life. Being the loving brother, Robert does despair about her. He wants her to have the kind of life he now has with Diana but fate seemed to have other plans for Annabelle. She’s known to be a plain looking girl, as aside as The Ordinary, one of the major reasons why she never had many beaus to begin with. Though, when her only fiancé left her for an empty-headed, yet pretty young miss, Annabelle wasn’t hurt. Disappointed, yes, she even laughed a little but it didn’t cast any shadows on her life. She has gone on to live as she liked to, and enjoying whatever freedom she can have as an unmarried spinster of her age. But then, one Laird Graenfrae happened to her and everything seemed to turn upside down for her!

Saving Poughkeepsie
Debra Anastasia
(Poughkeepsie Brotherhood #3)
Published: November 22, 2014 by Omnific Publishing

Beckett Taylor’s quest to be a better man has brought Eve Hartt back into his life, but sometimes it feels like they’re bound together with barbed wire. Though he longs to love her without causing pain, the wreckage of their past continues to crash down around them.

Yet with the help of this brothers—and for his brothers—Beckett won’t stop trying. He’s determined to make them all a family, to make a life they want to live, and to make Poughkeepsie a place that’s safe to live it.

He can feel their futures balanced precariously on his shoulders: Blake and Livia and their children, Cole and Kyle and the new baby they’ve just brought home, and Eve…always Eve. He wants their dreams to be real. But murderers don’t just get Happily Ever After handed to them. They have to wrench it away from Satan himself.

Good thing Beckett is prepared to do just that. After all, saving Poughkeepsie is the only way his story ends.

Prepare your heart and your head for a wild ride in this final installment of the Poughkeepsie Brotherhood series. Debra Anastasia does not disappoint as she weaves the last chapter of a story that blends true love, turbulent emotions, and life’s harsh realities into an uplifting tale that calls to the good in each of us.

Saving Poughkeepsie
Poughkeepsie Brotherhood #3

Debra Anastasia
Contemporary Romance
Pub date: November 22, 2014 (ARC review)

H/h - Beckett Taylor/Eve Hartt
Setting: Present time.

Read in November, 2014.
My rating:

                                                        [spoiler alert]

Saving Poughkeepsie is the fabulous conclusion to Debra Anastasia’s Poughkeepsie Brotherhood series. I have been hooked in this series since book 1, Poughkeepsie and much invested in the lives of the characters, so much so, I would have had hysteria if this installment took 2 yrs more, as did book 2, Return to Poughkeepsie.

The series is very much interconnected, so I’d recommend that you read it back to back. For me, I started this series early 2012, so there was a gap in between. The character that I never forgot was Beckett, whom I adoringly call my Gangsta Babe. He’s such a colorful character and a hilarious piece of a$$ that I can’t help but shake my head at his activities. And I make no secret that he is my favorite of the three brothers.

In Poughkeepsie, we meet three ‘brothers’ Beckett, Blake and Cole. I put brothers inside quote because they’re not connected by blood but by circumstances, yet their shared bond for many years have proven to be stronger than any blood relation out there. All three were either abandoned or orphaned as a child, passed on into various foster cares as they grew up. This is also how they met. Lots happened since then. Beckett, the bigger and the stronger one, has always been the one to protect his brothers from harm. Blake is the one who seems more vulnerable because of his psychological problems. He’s not entirely crazy mind you, but some incidents can tick him wrongly, thus making him unstable. But he’s also very talented with a piano. Cole is the cool and calm one, the former priest and the resident voice of reason.

Cover Him With Darkness
The Book of the Watchers #1

Janine Ashbless
Published in 2014

H/h - Azazel the Fallen/Milja
Setting: Present time (with elements of time-travel).

Read in November, 2014.
My rating:

                                                    [spoiler alert]

I’ve been dying to write a review for Cover Him With Darkness by Janine Ashbless, The Book of the Watchers #1. The 2 reasons why I wanted to read this was, that it apparently had a fallen angel in it, a theme I really love and the title caught my eyes.

Now, prior to reading this, I had no idea Cover Him With Darkness is a line from the Book of Enoch, that connects to the fallen angel, Azazel and how he was banished for eternity for corrupting the human race. My idea about these references is vague at best, which is why I’ll stick to the story itself. I did some internet search while reading this book, to learn more about Azazel. His is even more vague. In some places he’s called a fallen angel, in some a demon, in others he’s even referred to as Satan. The only thing I got from it all that you’re not supposed to consort with the likes of him, especially if you’re not equipped to play with his fire. LOL Fortunately, the book itself did a good job of giving me an idea of him, albeit fiction-wise. He was a tough to like character, let alone love. I have read some fallen angel stories before, but the fallen angel in question had won my heart nonetheless. I wasn’t even sure how Azazel can be a ‘hero’ when he’s such a brilliant douchebag! But WOW, the flow of the story was so good that I had to keep reading to know what’s coming next.

Cover Him With Darkness is a fast-paced story that tells you about a girl named Milja of Montenegro, and how her life changes dramatically when she releases ‘The Prisoner’ of her childhood memories and broken adult dreams.
