A free installment

Maya Banks
Contemporary Romance
Published in 2007

H/h - Cameron Ducote/Lily Carruthers
Setting: Present time.

Read in June, 2012.
My rating:

                                                    [spoiler alert]

It is that time of the month again when I’m in need of a quickie...
...to further my GR challenge goal. What did you think gutter-minds?

But honestly...

No, just no! This story was quite lame, even for a novella. I’m yet to read any MB contemporary (having only read her Scottish HRs and loving them), but I’m not impressed by this little sneak preview. This started and ended just like that, I felt nothing for the H or h or the story itself. NADA!

BTW: don’t forget the count the eye rolls as you go. *heehee*

One rainy night, Sheriff Cameron was whiling away his time in a bar when suddenly a frightened looking woman, all wet from the rain, bursts in. There was nothing much afterwards. He is intrigued by her frightened look and has this *eye roll* sudden burst of protective instinct towards her... He takes her home and to ‘take away her fear and pain’, has sex with her. The next day, she disappears.

3 months pass by without a sign of her... 3 MONTHS and he thought from that one night stand that she’s the love of his life? *eye roll*

3 months, he couldn’t trace her at all, even though she gave him her full name, Lily. Nothing says it was a false name so... *eye roll*

Suddenly Lily appears again 3 months later, as Cameron was whiling away again in the same bar like some lovesick puppy and hoping like everyday, that she will re-appear. Now, hold onto your seats... Before he inquires anything, ANYTHING about her sudden disappearance or her past, Cameron takes her to his home again and you can guess what they did throughout the night. *eye roll*

The next morning she comes out with her big revelation, which was, TBH, just lame again. She was married when they first met but it wasn’t a marriage of her choice. She was ‘forced’ in this marriage to a wealthy man by her father. She didn’t want to ‘disappoint her father’, so she gave in. Her husband wanted a baby but as she couldn’t conceive, he ‘blamed her’ for it. He wasn’t physically abusive but she thought he might turn to abusing her or something and she ran away that night... I think you can connect the dots now.

I mean seriously? In what era do they live in? It’s not even a less developed country where these practices are still there, so... I just don’t know. Imagine more eye roll.

Sorry but everything seemed totally lame to me. 2 stars.

I can’t even blame it on the rain since lately there haven’t been much raining where I’m at.

“Blame the Rain” was a free novella some moons ago. It’s not available on MB’s website anymore. I got my copy from a good friend of mine.
