Duchess Decadence by Wendy LaCapra

Duchess Decadence
Furies #3

Wendy LaCapra
Historical Romance
Published: October 19, 2015 (ARC review)

H/h - The Duke of Wynchester/Thea, the Duchess of Wynchester
Setting: England, 1784.

Read in October, 2015.
My rating:

                                                       [spoiler alert]

Duchess Decadence brings the conclusion to Wendy LaCapra’s fabulous the Furies series. I’ve enjoyed all the previous installments and glad to report that the final book didn’t disappoint! I’ve been intrigued by Wyn, the Duke of Wynchester and Thea, his Duchess’s “past” since the beginning of this series. Now that I’ve finished it, I can see why they were chosen to grace the grand finale of this series.

In Greek and Roman mythology, the Furies were female spirits of justice and vengeance. In this series, they are a group of 3 ladies, widowed and married yet estranged from their husbands, both; who have formed an unlikely friendship and are sworn to protect each-other. So in a way, they do resemble the Furies of the myth. These ladies have fallen on hard times due to some injustice done to them, yet resolving to earn their living. And for that, they can’t afford to play by the rules. The Furies, Lavinia or Lady Vaile, Lady Sophia Beneham and the Duchess of Wynchester, Thea, have put all their resources together to earn their living by opening a gambling club, where they go by as Lady Vice, Lady Scandal and Duchess Decadence. The events are hosted at Lady Sophia’s grand estate. In time, the club gained enough popularity with the rakes and gentlemen of the Ton alike, giving the ladies a strong financial backbone, though not without a scandalous reputation.

Summer Campaign by Carla Kelly

Summer Campaign

Carla Kelly
Historical Romance
Published in 2012

H/h - Major Jack Beresford/Onyx Hamilton
Setting: England, Regency.

Read in October, 2015.
My rating:

                                                         [spoiler alert]

I was reading something else, needed a distraction and found it in the sweet and beautiful Summer Campaign, one of Carla Kelly’s books that I’ve had for a while but haven’t had a chance to read. From the very first page I was hooked and kept thinking why didn’t I turn to this one before!

Summer Campaign is a traditional regency or what you call “clean” historical romance. It’s a reissue of Ms. Kelly’s 1989 release. I recently noticed that the book has been reissued once again this year, though until I read my 2012 edition and discussed with a friend who bought the latest edition, I hadn’t any notion of any changes. I’ll talk about that later... but first, into the review.

Major Jack Beresford, a veteran of the Peninsular War (of 1807–1814), is just returning to England. He’s bone weary and disillusioned and just wants to go home to his elder brother Adrian, the current Marquess of Sherbourn and SIL Emily. Jack has seen it all, done it all in the field of war. He has been touted as a hero many times but he doesn’t feel worthy of any of it. All he sees is death and destruction... blood and gore. Bloated dead bodies of young boys who fought under his command and died, trying to swallow him whole. Yes, Jack has PTSD as we find him telling Onyx that he “dreams in red”. He also stutters, something I assumed started happening after his traumatic experience in the war.

Georgian Jewellery

When it comes to labelling the late 18th and early 19th century there is a little bit of confusion.

Quite correctly, one could say that the Georgian era lasted from the reign of George I in 1714 until the death of George IV in 1830. Equally you’d be correct if you included in the Georgian era, the seven year reign of William IV which then ushered in the Victorian era with the ascension of the eponymous Queen.

On the other hand, it could be said the Georgian era ended with the Regency era with George IV taking on the full responsibilities of his father from 1811 to his death in 1820 when George IV became king in his own right.

However, if you’re talking about literature and architectural design or politics and social reform, the Regency era actually begins in 1795 – it’s all so confusing!

In that case, let’s have a look at some beautiful jewellery instead.

The Georgian era put an end to sumptuary laws where only the rich and noble could wear particular items of clothing or jewellery as a display of their title. The rising merchant class (some of whom were more wealthy than the nobility) could afford fine jewels and they weren’t shy about flaunting their success.

There was jewellery for daytime – necklaces, earrings, bracelets and chatelaines for women, rings and bejewelled shoe buckles for men, studded in coral, garnet, agate, pearl and turquoise – and at night diamonds (or at least very high quality paste stones) sparkled, aided by silver and gold foiled backs to create a diamond riviere – a diamond river around a beautiful woman’s neck.

Drop and chandelier earrings in beautiful cut stones designed to complement the necklaces and shockers were sold in beautifully fitted cases.

Fashion and styles criss-crossed the English Channel with trends and designs in England as much influenced by the taste of Louis’s court as much as the French kept a watchful eye on the Georgian fancy.

Sadly, all good things have to come to an end and with the American Revolution and the French Revolution taking a toll on the wallet as well as the mood, the over the top style became more classic and subdued during the Regency period.

Hold 2 (novella)
Hold Trilogy #2

Jayne Blue
Contemporary/New Adult
Published in 2015

H/h - Craddock Flynn/Cassidy
Setting: Present time.

Read in August-September, 2015.
My rating:

                                                         [spoiler alert]

Hold 2 of Hold Trilogy by Jayne Blue went so off the track that I’m not even sure how I finished it. I liked book 1 quite a lot so I was very excited to finish the trilogy. Each installment came out a month apart and even with those irritating cliffys, I could barely wait to read. Unfortunately, this time wait hasn’t been worth it.

Just to tell you first that I absolutely despise love triangles as more often than not it ruins the story for me. Either a completely good person gets hurt in the end, or does something to try my patience and I keep wondering why on earth this individual is even a part here. I don’t always see the point of a love triangle and try to avoid any book containing it. The first installment, Hold 1, gave a hint of a building like that and I got apprehensive instantly. My apprehension was due to the fact that the third member of this triangle was more infatuated than in love with the heroine. Or so I felt he was. I was hoping for a smart way to tackle this unfortunate buildup but the author completely messed up in this installment. If it was done to create angst and intrigue, it failed quite royally IMO.

In book 1, we meet this orphaned girl Cassidy who was desperately looking for a job when she finds one as an assistant in a gym called Great Wolves (GWG). It’s a gym which trains MMA fighters. She’s quite brilliant and soon Cassidy shines in her job, helping Whitey, the ancient trainer with anything that needed the help of technology like computer, to handle it.
