We all have that someone we can’t forget, the summer it all began, and the sleepless nights wondering what went wrong.

For Gage Montgomery, that someone is Layla Baxter. When he was 18, he took one look at the chocolate-haired bookworm with porcelain skin and knew his life would never be the same. But it all came crashing down when Layla suddenly and mysteriously disappeared from St. Simons Island -- leaving him with nothing but her angel wing pendent around his neck. For 12 long years, Gage couldn’t shake what happened, if he’s the one to blame, wondering where Layla might be.

When their paths finally cross, he’s determined to get the answers he’s spent his life searching for -- and to get the girl, too. Quiet Angel is a story of hope, survival, and lost love made new again.

“I missed you, too, but you were never far.” Gage touched his shirt with the wings inside. “You were always there.”

Lennox Collins is a spoiled and pretentious twenty-something; believing anyone living below the poverty line should be extinguished from the earth.

In reality, she’s no different from those she thinks are beneath her since she pathetically reaps from her father’s wealth. After reluctantly saving a strange homeless man from his demise, she slowly discovers a new being within herself. While she nurses him back to health, her daily ritual and sleeping patterns begin to evolve into a life she could never fathom.

There’s only one problem though; the deeper she goes, the less she can differentiate between reality and her own mind.

*This is a contemporary romance with supernatural elements*

The Highwayman by Judith James

The Highwayman
Rakes and Rogues of the Restoration #3

Judith James
Historical Romance
Published in 2014

H/h - John "Swift Nick" Nevison/Arabella Hamilton, The Countess of Saye
Setting: England, 1680.

Read in February, 2015.
My rating:

                                                  [spoiler alert]
“The wind was a torrent of darkness among the gusty trees,
The moon was a ghostly galleon tossed upon cloudy seas,
The road was a ribbon of moonlight, over the purple moor,
And the highwayman came riding—
Riding—riding—
The highwayman came riding, up to the old inn-door.”
Much like the book itself, I’d like to start by quoting Alfred Noyes’s famous and hauntingly beautiful poetry “The Highwayman”, though I’ll have to give the credit to Loreena McKennitt and her equally hauntingly beautiful rendition of this poem for introducing it to me. Though I’ve read romance novels with a highwaymen hero before, ever since I’ve read this poem, I’ve come to have a different sort of perspective about them. Previously I don’t remember having any particular fondness for highwaymen heroes but somehow Judith James’ story made me think differently, be it the poem itself, the storyline or the fact that her novels are almost always rich with history.

The Heroine in All of Us

Why do we read fiction? Because we to want to live a part of our day somewhere else. We all have our favorite places, but we must escape, even for a short while, to a world where we are safe, but our heroines aren’t. Inherently, we all worry. It’s not pretty, but it’s human nature. Instead of fretting about our own lives, the best thing we can do for ourselves is to worry about our heroines instead, whether we’re a reader or an author. How will she escape her fate? When will she realize the hero’s in love with her? Can’t she hear us warning her to be careful?

You are the heroine. That’s what workshop authors tell us. Yes, to do your best character writing, it’s advised, you must think like the heroine. Get into her skin. You’re on the horse. The corset is digging into your ribs and you can’t breathe. No, you don’t want to ride sidesaddle.

I took that advice! And stepped back in time. But seriously, I hadn’t ridden a horse since I was 12. The guy holding the reins in the picture, assured me I would be safe on Thunder, one of the Renaissance Festival’s jousting warhorses, but I wasn’t so sure. Yes, the corset dug into my ribs and no, I didn’t dare ride sidesaddle.

Did it help?  Yes! My friend captured me in a shot that inspired my writing. When I looked at that picture, I was able to remember the hard leather of the saddle, the horse’s massive muscles moving beneath me, how high I sat. Not the computer chair where I did my writing.

Another place and time. I’ll admit, it was fun dressing up and stepping back in time, to experience the sights and sounds of a place I wanted to write about. I met knights, peasants, clergy and royalty, all in a visit to the Ren Fair.  Those characters spoke to me when I was writing. They told their stories in a way that wouldn’t have been as authentic, if I hadn’t taken the time to be my heroine for a day.

Our heroines inspire us. Yes, the heroines we create or read about, often help us have the courage and resolve to take on people, events and challenges, we might have otherwise avoided. For writers, the inspiration to share our stories with others, takes some of the fear out publishing. Sure we all want to  sell a lot of books, but sometimes the greatest satisfaction comes from helping a reader forget her battles and allow her to cheer for someone else’s victory. I’m very grateful to Soul Mate, for giving me that opportunity.

DAYTON, OHIO – Readers are applauding the new historical romance novel The Lady of the Garter by first-time author Marisa Dillon.

“What do you get when you mix an alpha knight in shining armor and a feisty lady in need of one? That equates to a rollicking, fast-paced tale of love, honor, mystery and revenge,” wrote reader (and established author) Terri Valentine on Amazon.com, adding that the story will “hold you spellbound page after page.

The Highlander's Folly by Barbara Longley

The Highlander's Folly
Loch Moigh #3

Barbara Longley
Historical Romance/Time-Travel
Pub date: February 3, 2015 (ARC review)

H/h - Hunter of Clan MacKintosh/Meghan McGladrey
Setting: The Highlands, Scotland, 1441.

Read in February, 2015.
My rating:

                                                    [spoiler alert]

Barbara Longley’s The Highlander’s Folly is the 3rd installment of her time-travel, Loch Moigh, series. I’ve read and loved the first two installments, but unfortunately, this one was rather frustrating. And I blame no one but Hunter!

Why? I’ll go there soon, but first a little recap. Loch Moigh started with True to the Highlander where we find that the Fae have been meddling with the MacKintosh clan for a long time. The reasons behind start unraveling as the story, and the series, progressed. I’d recommend reading the series back to back as the incidents happening are rather intertwined IMO.

Alethia, or True as the MacKintosh start calling her, is transported in time by a gypsy woman called Madame Giselle while she was working at a Renaissance fair. True had no idea what was coming, so all of it was very sudden, where she finds herself in the 15th c Highlands, rescued by the Laird’s heir, Malcolm. She ultimately finds a home at Moigh Hall, the MacKintosh Laird’s keep. True is an orphan with mixed origin. She’s part Red Indian. She had been ‘gifted’ ever since her birth, a fact though she tried hiding most of the times, becomes apparent soon because her ‘specialty’ lies in having the visions of negative things. She soon starts having those visions about Malcolm, his father William and how an enemy clan would betray them at a later point. Malcolm and his family believed in True’s seemingly fantastical story because they were familiar with Giselle. People here always sensed that she’s  not human. Everybody who saw her, saw her as an old crone, no matter the year. She never changed.

A Valentine for His Secretary by Melanie Marchande

A Valentine for His Secretary (novella)
A Novel Deception novella

Melanie Marchande
Contemporary Romance/Erotica (light bondage)
Published in 2015

H/h - Adrian Risinger/Meghan Burns
Setting: Present time.

Read in February, 2015.
My rating:

                                                  [might be spoiler-ish]

I’ve been on a Melanie Marchande roll recently with her A Novel Deception series. The first book, His Secretary: Undone was really fun and flirty that featured a hot boss and his awkward secretary. I loved their chemistry so much that I had been wishing for a glance of this couple ever since. Well, hello, here is a glimpse for sure! A Valentine for His Secretary unquestionably gives you a taste of Adrian and Meghan’s relationship.

It all started with an astray that was mentioned in the blurb, or might’ve been something heavier that Meghan has always dreamed about throwing at her hot, arrogant, a$$hole of a boss, who, it seems, loves making her life hell. Any ‘life’ is pretty much non-existence for her since she’s the devoted (and resigned) secretary to a big corporate boss. Meghan loves to hate this man, knowing he’s way out of her reach and bounds, pretty sure that he feels the same way about her. At least the ‘loves to hate part’. Their verbal sparring would sure lead you to believe this, yet there is something else about it too. However much she hates him, Adrian Risinger is not only sexy and brilliant but also filthy rich. Overall, he’s Meghan’s every fantasy come true. Adrian, however much of an a$$hole, never criticized her looks or her mouthy self. She definitely had not lost her job over any of it.

You’ll only ever have one forbidden love.

Care to know why?

Because when you find it, forbidden love that is, you’ll forget everything else. You’ll forget your first kiss. You’ll forget the first boy who made you smile. You’ll forget all the bad, and remember all the good. You’ll forget that it’s wrong. You’ll forget that it hurts. You’ll forget everything that came before him.

Forbidden love, it has a way of changing you. The secrets. The lies. The guilt. You want something so much you no longer care about the world around you. The passion takes away the pain. I’ve felt it. I’ve lived it. I didn’t need it, but it chose me.

I met him before I knew. I loved him before I knew.

I didn’t know that he was my stepbrother. I knew I had stepbrothers, but I didn’t know he was one of them. Now I know, I have to walk away. My mom, she deserves this happiness so much more than I do. If she ever knew…it would destroy her.

You have to understand why.

I saw my father die right in front of my tiny, eight year old eyes. He took my sister with him. All that’s left is my mother and I. She’s found her happy place, the only place she’s had since our worlds were destroyed.

So you see, I can’t have him.

I can’t want him.

But there’s this problem with passion, and love, and destiny.

It doesn’t give you a damned choice.
